On September 21, 2011 Dr. Cathleen Carr, founder and Executive Director of CertifiedCare and CertifiedeCare.org gave a multimedia presentation entitled ” Elder Abuse and the Family Caregiver”  before  the Solon, Ohio chapter of Rotary International.  She was invited to speak by Betty Hickle, Director at Large.

The purpose of her presentation was to raise awareness about the prevalence of elder abuse and neglect and the importance of caregiver certification to help reduce these ‘shame crimes’.

She pointed out that States will face significant shortfalls in the long-term care workforce particularly among those delivering home based services to the frail elderly.

As people live longer and have fewer children, family structures are transformed. This has important implications in terms of providing care to older people.  In our country that has a very low birth rate, future generations will have few if any siblings. As a result of this local and global trend toward having fewer children, people will have less familial care and support as they age.

Dr. Carr explained that because of the growing ranks of people living well into the 80’s and 90’s there will be an ever growing need for well trained elder care providers for the future.  She further explained that because of this coming ‘Third Age boom’ the best time to invest in eldercare education and training is now while we are just ahead of the curve.

Dr Carr said, “This presentation delineates science-based strategies and highlights calls to action that  facilitate the delivery of multiple preventive services to the elderly.” Her emphasis was on the importance of caregiver education and training prior to undertaking the challenging work of elder care giving.
